In eyes with neurotrophic keratopathy (NK), postoperative epithelial healing following penetrating keratoplasty (PK) remains a major clinical challenge, often predisposing to graft failure and complications. A recent multicenter retrospective cohort study highlights that concomitant tarsorrhaphy significantly enhances epithelial healing , with 88.2% of eyes achieving complete closure and a mean healing time of approximately 14.7 days. Importantly, this intervention also translated into statistically significant visual improvement, reinforcing its dual structural and functional benefit.
Interestingly, outcomes were comparable between temporary and permanent tarsorrhaphy, suggesting flexibility in surgical decision-making based on patient profile and disease severity.
