A Mohali-based woman has been awarded Rs 50 lakh compensation by the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (DCDRC) after a routine treatment for a gastrointestinal problem at a Chandigarh hospital resulted in gangrene and the partial amputation of her hand. The patient was admitted to one of the hospitals in Chandigarh in 2020 with complaints of headache, vomiting, stomach pain, and backache, and was diagnosed with a gastroenterological condition. As part of her treatment, a cannula was inserted into her left hand for administering intravenous medications.

However, within three days, she reported swelling and pain in her hand, which doctors allegedly dismissed as normal and expected to subside.
