Dr. C B Sanjeevi is a Professor and Head of the research group for Diabetes-Immunology at Karolinska Institute. Dr. Sanjeevi runs a type 1 diabetes network in India in coordination with the Cuttack Diabetes Research Foundation in Cuttack, Odisha. Targeting immune-checkpoint receptors are found to be a breakthrough therapy for the treatment of many types of cancer including breast and lung cancer. However, checkpoint inhibition therapy has an unintended effect on beta cells of islets of Langerhans. Activated T-cells target not only the cancerous cells but also the beta cells.
