In developing countries, chronic diseases have become a major problem of global morbidity and mortality. In India, the prevalence of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) was 800 per million population (pmp), and the incidence of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) was 150-200 pmp, in 2009. In India, the most common cause of CKD is diabetic nephropathy. As per Indian Council of Medical Research, the prevalence of diabetes has risen and is as high as 28% (over the age of 40 years). Likewise the reported prevalence of hypertension in the adult population today is 17%.

With rising prevalence of these diseases in India, prevalence of CKD is expected to rise, and obviously this is the key target population to address.
