The obesity pandemic is a major public health problem because of its association with non-communicable diseases and all-cause mortality, which can be improved or delayed with weight loss. The existing scientific evidence suggests that dietary fat can play a significant role in weight loss and maintenance. Several meta-analyses of intervention trials demonstrate that fat-reduced diets lead to a greater weight loss than normal-fat diets. Current evidence indicates that the ideal diet to prevent obesity and weight gain is low in fat and sugar-rich beverages and high in carbohydrates, fiber, grains, and proteins.
