Technology development is on the rise, making it difficult to predict the health consequences of this evolution. Inadvertently, the rampant use of cell phones, poses a potential threat to cognitive health of children. A group of researchers from Manipal University studied the effects of chronic and repeated radio-frequency electromagnetic radiation exposure. This study was focused on prepubescent exposure to investigate immediate effects and its implications in adulthood. The research revealed deficits in progressive learning and progressive consolidation of information.
Radiation exposure was found to induce cell loss and disruption of circuitry in hippocampus. These findings in prepubescent period can lead to changes in hippocampal volume in adulthood and cause degeneration eventually. Source: Narayanan SN, Kumar RS, Karun KM, Nayak SB, Bhat PG.
