Diabetes mellitus is relatively a common disease that can complicate pregnancy and is a risk factor for various congenital malformations. This article outlines the recent clinical data regarding congenital heart disease in offspring of mothers suffering from different types of diabetes mellitus. In 2014, World Health Organization reported a 9% worldwide prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) in people over 18 years old. From this cohort, 90% suffer from type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM).
Although perinatal mortality has declined dramatically during the latest decades, in diabetic pregnancies, most studies involving large populations continue to report a higher mortality among these patients when compared with control populations.
