According to IU Medical School, the patient consent won’t be mandatory in an upcoming clinical trial for management of patients suffering from cardiac arrest. The cardiac arrest patients in the hospital will be randomly selected either for treatment in a specialized catheterization lab or in the ICU. Vice Chair of Research for the Department of Emergency Medicine, IU Medical School raised the question, whether this will help people to survive when their heartbeats stop. This trial may work to improve the survival rate of patients with sudden death.
The ACCESS trial is exempt from informed consent for unconscious patients if a family member or legal representative is not available.
