Oral cancer comprises about 30% of all head and neck malignant tumors, 90% of which are squamous cell carcinomas, while the remaining 10% present rare malignancies (minor salivary gland tumors, unusual forms of squamous cell carcinoma, sarcomas, melanomas, lymphomas). Some of them are of odontogenic origin too. Metastases in the neck region require comprehensive clearance of regional lymphatic nodes. An increased risk of the positive neck lymph node to more than 15-20% necessitates elective neck dissection. Treatment of such cancers requires not only a thorough understanding of disease progression but also its approaches to management and options for reconstruction.
