In a new move, the National Medical Commission of India has suspended the controversial "Registered Medical Practitioner (Professional Conduct) Regulations,” dated August 3, 2023, making them temporarily ineffective. These changes come as a result of the objections raised by the medical fraternity, especially against the mandate for doctors to prescribe generic medicines (pharmacological names) only, failing which could lead to the suspension of their practice license for up to 30 days. Instead, the “Indian Medical Council Professional Conduct, Etiquette, and Ethics Regulations,” 2002, will be in effect immediately.
