Youth-onset type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a chronic metabolic disorder that develops during childhood or adolescence, primarily due to insulin resistance and progressive β-cell dysfunction. It is strongly associated with obesity, sedentary lifestyle, and a family history of diabetes. Unlike adult-onset T2D, the disease in youth progresses more rapidly, leading to early complications such as nephropathy, retinopathy, and cardiovascular disease. Early diagnosis, lifestyle modification, and appropriate pharmacologic therapy are essential to prevent long-term health consequences and preserve β-cell function.
