First time successfully done in India in a paediatric patient, our experience. Aortic root aneurysm is a rare disorder occurring 1 in 100000 persons. Here the root of the aorta dilates abnormally causing stretching of the aortic valve leading to aortic valve regurgitation. If the size of the aneurysm crosses 40 mm in children (normal is 15-20mm) there is always the risk of rupture and sudden death.
Our patient was an 11 yr old male child living in a remote village in Tamil Nadu whose only symptoms were breathlessness and chest discomfort. He attended one of our screening camps where our cardiologist diagnosed him to have aortic root aneurysm. Realising the severity of the lesion ( his aortic diameter was 50 mm) and chances of sudden decompensation he was immediately referred to hospital to the paediatric cardiac surgeon for immediate surgery.
