The Union health ministry has denied 82 existing medical colleges permission to accept students for the 2018-19 academic session, blocking at least 10,430 of the estimated 64,000 MBBS seats available nationwide. It has also rejected proposals to approve 68 new medical colleges, including two in Bengal and four in Bihar, which would have added 9,000 MBBS seats for the 2018-19 academic session. The decisions, announced on Thursday, were based on recommendations from the Medical Council of India.
The decrease in number of seats is a major blow in reducing the gap between the need and the existing doctor population ratio. Share your views. Source- The Telegraph
