Stress is an integral part of all medical students and a leading cause of depression and suicidal ideation. Early diagnosis is a key factor to reduce and initiate treatment for such cases. Recent evidence revealed that a quarter of medical students struggle with depression and more than 1 in 10 have suicidal thoughts.
Extreme levels of expectations and competition, very long duration of the study and inadequate counseling forums to express their feelings are few reasons behind the rising number of depression cases in medical students. Moreover, the prevalence of depressive symptoms among medical students is significantly higher when compared with the general population of the same age, which underscores the need for preventive efforts and increased access to care for medical students.
