Reproductive system disorders (RSDs) can disturb hormonal balance in women and contribute to psychological distress, yet their link with depression has not been well studied. To address this gap, a large Danish study examined the association between RSDs and depression among 265,891 women diagnosed with 24 different RSDs, including polycystic ovary syndrome, endometriosis , and pain-related conditions. The analysis showed that women had higher rates of depression both before and after an RSD diagnosis, with the highest risk occurring within the first year after diagnosis.

Notably, the prevalence of depression was 44% higher as early as three years before the initial RSD diagnosis. Within one year of diagnosis, incidence rate ratios for depression ranged from 1.15 to 2.09, depending on the specific RSD subtype.
