Vision Impairment in Diabetes: A Decade of Shifting Burden With rising diabetes prevalence, vision impairment is becoming an increasingly significant public health concern. This 10-year analysis from Taiwan evaluated the burden of vision loss among adults with diabetes, examining differences across age, sex, and geographic regions. Diabetic retinopathy emerged as the leading contributor, accounting for 50.8% of the total vision impairment burden and 1283.9 years lived with disability. The age-standardized prevalence per 1000 individuals showed a gradient across severity— 0.58 (mild), 0.50 (moderate), 0.12 (severe), and 0.09 (blindness) —highlighting the progressive impact of disease.
