Numerous spike mutations allow the virus to evade host immunity and improve transmissibility. Serum neutralizing factor is a strong predictor of immunity; however, studies have demonstrated that sera from vaccinated or naturally infected individuals possess diminished neutralizing activity against the spike proteins of some of the new variants. In addition, the diversity and prevalence of these variants have undergone rapid changes throughout the pandemic resulting in varying capacities to neutralize the variants based on their genotypes from previous exposures, including vaccines.

The following study aimed at determining the neutralizing activity generated from exposure to certain SARS-CoV-2 variants, vaccines, or both. Study design Findings Neutralizing antibody response generated by vaccines and natural SARS-CoV-2 infection is most potent against variants with spike mutations.โ€ฆ
