Most of us know that for an obstetrician getting a full night's sleep is a luxury which can be hard to take for granted. They are used to be being on call, and to getting up at all hours, in order to help a woman to give birth , or to tackle an emergency. Obstetrics is full of uncertainty, and while most pregnancies are uncomplicated, things can go sour at any time, without any warning.
This why they are usually light sleepers, and have mastered the art of catching a few winks when they can; and of getting up in an instant when the phone rings. Are they at higher risk of suffering from sleep disorders ? Is this an occupational hazard they have to learn to live with ?
