Intermittent fasting (IF) has emerged as a potential strategy for weight and metabolic control, yet evidence comparing its effectiveness with calorie restriction (CR) in individuals with type 2 diabetes remains limited. To address this gap, a study assessed the impact of a CR diet with and without a 12-hour overnight IF regimen on weight loss, glycemic control, and medication reduction involving 99 adults aged 21โ€“60 years with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

The study demonstrated that the combined IF + CR intervention produced significantly greater improvements than CR alone, including superior weight loss (โˆ’6.51% vs โˆ’4.41%) and enhanced glycaemic control, with lower HbA1c levels (6.51% vs 6.86%) and a greater median HbA1c reduction [โˆ’0.50 vs โˆ’0.20]. IF + CR also resulted in more pronounced reductions in waist and hip circumferences and body fat massย (-9.39%) compared to the CR (-5.32%),โ€ฆ
