On one hand, there is a shortage of medical teachers in medical colleges and on the other, the government wants to increase the number of doctors being graduated every year which can only be done either by increasing MBBS seats in the existing medical colleges or opening of new ones. In both these conditions, the number of medical teachers also required to be increased. The eligibility criteria for new medical teachers is not so easy to fulfil. Any doctor can be posted in peripheral hospitals but not in medical colleges.

There exist disparities between retirement age of medical teachers in recommendations of MCI and their implementation by different states, health universities all over the country with wide variations from 62 years to 75 years.
