Under the rule of East India company, where education was a faraway thing for women, Dr Kadambini Ganguly became the first women graduates from India and the entire British Empire, and the first female physicians trained in western medicine in the whole of South Asia. Dr Anandibai joshi was the first Indian woman to obtain a medical degree through training in Western medicine, Kadambini Ganguly earned a medical degree the same year, after Anandibai. Although she was born at Bhagalpur in Bihar, her family was originally from Chandsi, in Barisal (now in Bangladesh). Her father was headmaster of Bhagalpur School by profession.
