In July 2009, dronedarone came into existence as an anti-arrhythmic agent to reduce the risk of cardiovascular hospitalization in patients with atrial fibrillation. Atrial fibrillation (AF) is an abnormality of heart rhythm. It is the most common arrhythmia requiring hospitalization. Its effect range from mild symptoms, such as breathlessness on exercise, to potentially fatal outcomes, such as stroke. The global burden of AF is increasing.
The estimated number of individuals with AF globally in 2010 was 33.5 million among which 20.9 million were men, and 12.6 million were women.
