Obstetricians and gynecologists have to address life’s major transitions as far as women are concerned. This situation presents myriad issues, ranging from the basic health needs of women and their human rights to more intricate issues of modern medical science involving genomics. The Committee for the Ethical and Professional Aspects of Human Reproduction and Women’s Health, since its establishment on February 19, 1985, has addressed ethical concerns across the whole eld of research and practice in women’s health.
It has raised public awareness as well as awareness amongst practitioners and policy makers of these issues. There are more than79 existing FIGO (International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics) ethics and professionalism guidelines in a volume which is updated every few years by the committee.
