The extracorporeal bioengineered dual-cell liver regeneration system (EBDLR) is an innovative liver assist device developed by researchers at IISc Bengaluru to treat patients with acute liver failure (ALF). The EBDLR system features a multi-layered biopurifier composed of membranes and cells, along with a plasma separator. It mimics key liver functions by filtering toxins, regulating metabolism, and synthesizing protein. This allows critically ill patients’  livers time to regenerate or serves as a bridge to transplantation. The system aims to significantly reduce mortality in ALF cases, particularly where liver donors are unavailable.
