This is the ability to recognize objects by feel and manipulation. It requires the ability to feel with the hands and to assess size and shape by the position of the joints. It also involves the ability to move the hands over and around the object. It can be checked by putting objects into a patient’s hand or hands while he is blindfolded and asking him to state what they are. Everyday articles should be chosen such as money, buttons, pens etc.
Another method would be to put a number of simple articles into an opaque bag and ask the patient to bring out only the pen or coin or button.
