The US FDA has recently given priority review designation for Belimumab intravenous (IV) infusion for pediatric patients suffering from Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). The approval marks the first ever treatment for children with lupus as earlier Belimumab had been approved only for adult patients. Though Lupus is rare in children if diagnosed it primarily damages organs such as kidneys and central nervous system. The therapy was given accelerated approval to fulfil the unmet needs of the treatment especially for pediatric patients with SLE.
Additionally, FDA intends to improve the quality of life and cut down the risk of organ failure and disability. Lastly, the motive is to control disease prevalence.
