FDA has recently approved a new short-acting follow-on insulin lispro injection to manage blood sugar in diabetes patients at mealtime. The final approval was followed by the tentative approval, which was granted on September 1, 2017. It is a fast-acting human insulin which improves blood sugar control in adults with Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and adults and children with Type 1 diabetes above the age of 3 years and older.

Generally, but not always, short-acting insulin products are administered just before meals to control blood sugar levels after meals. These types of insulin can be used in the insulin pumps to meet both background insulin needs as well as mealtime insulin needs.
