A team of doctors at the Al Garhoud Hospital, Dubai, recently performed the region's first meniscus allograft transplant of the knee cartilage on a renowned former UAE athlete. The patient previously underwent a total lateral meniscectomy, and since then he was suffering from persistent knee pain, despite following multiple treatment alternatives. Due to the total lateral meniscectomy , the patient was at an increased risk of osteoarthritis that would have required knee arthroplasty . Therefore, a meniscus allograft transplant was the only solution for the knee preservation of the patient.
However, for a successful meniscus transplant surgery, the donor and recipient meniscus should accurately match in size with each other.
