Hypoxemia is a critical measure of several grave conditions such as asthma , chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and COVID-19 . Though the conventional pulse oximeter accurately measures the blood-oxygen saturation (SPO 2 ) levels, incorporating this facility in a smartphone would greatly improve the ease of measuring SPO 2 in both at-home and healthcare settings. Researchers have developed the first smartphone camera-based SPO 2 sensing system using a varied fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO 2 ) protocol along with reflectance photoplethysmography (PPG) as opposed to transmittance PPG that a conventional pulse oximeter uses (cover image).
When a finger is placed over the camera and the flash of a smartphone , the novel sensor detects and records the blood oxygen levels via a deep learning algorithm . This sensor can detect a much wider range of SPO 2 values (70β100%) thanβ¦
