Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a type of glucose intolerance that develops in pregnant women and is characterized by its onset or detection during pregnancy. GDM symptoms can range from asymptomatic to severe hyperglycemia. Genetic and nongenetic factors, including maternal age, obesity, diet, and lifestyle, are associated with GDM.

1   Recent evidence indicates that the prevalence of GDM has risen in the last decade and that rates may be higher in specific ethnic or racial groups.1 Moreover, the prevalence of undiagnosed hyperglycemia and even overt diabetes in young women is increasing.
