Severe infections in young children include meningitis, sepsis, and pneumonia which can be responsible for considerable morbidity and mortality rates. Immunization programs undertaken by the respective countries help eradicate such potentially fatal diseases. However,  eliminating one strain can increase the prevalence of other strains of the same virus, causing similar diseases. Although such diseases occurring due to the alternate serotype can be rare, the lack of systematic reporting could underestimate the rate of infection worldwide.
