The American College of Gastroenterology has significantly changed the clinical guideline on the diagnosis and management of Barrett's esophagus indicating major advances in the use of endoscopic ablative therapy. Barrett's esophagus is a serious form of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). In Barrett's esophagus, the normal tissue lining the esophagus, the tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach, changes to tissue that resembles the lining of the intestine. About 10% of people with chronic symptoms of GERD develop Barrett's esophagus.
