The Kerala health department has issued show-cause notices to 56 doctors who are on unauthorized absence from government medical and pharmacy college hospitals. These doctors, who hold positions as assistant professors and lecturers, have been abstaining from their duties for one to seven years. Among them, 19 doctors are from the general medicine and general surgery departments. Remarkably, one lecturer has been absent since July 1, 2008. The absentee doctors have been urged to appear before the Additional Chief Secretary within 15 days and failure to do so will result in their termination from the hospitals.
