According to a study co-led by WHO a new drug formulation can prevent excessive bleeding in women post child birth which could save thousands of lives in developing and economically downtrodden countries. This drug named as ‘’carbetocin’’is found to be a useful alternative to oxytocin, which is currently recommended for preventing excessive bleeding after childbirth. The use of Oxytocin is very tricky and difficult as it needs to be stored at between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius. This makes it difficult for use in many countries where infrastructure and power supply is limited.
As a result, many women are deprived of this life-saving drug during childbirth. According to the study by researchers it is found that this drug ‘’carbetocin’’, which is a heat-stable drug, is as safe and effective as oxytocin.
