In patients with hematologic cancer, the effectiveness of platelet transfusion to prevent bleeding is unclear. In this publication synopsis, the authors compared prophylaxis vs no prophylaxis platelet transfusion in hematologic cancer. Patients with hematologic cancers, develops severe thrombocytopenia as a consequence of the disease or treatment. To reduce the risk of bleeding and increase low platelet counts, platelet transfusions are administered as prophylaxis.
However, the degree of benefit for prophylactic platelet transfusion in severe thrombocytopenia is unclear.
