Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) infection is most common cause of genital infections worldwide. Therefore, effective strategies are needed for the control and prevention of this sexually transmitted infection. In a recent study, scientists have illustrated the effectiveness of a Tenofovir-based microbicide gel by assessing the effects of this gel in a group of women. For this double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study a group of 422 HSV-2 negative women was selected.
Women were advised to use this gel before and after intercourse during the duration of this study. Incidence of HSV-2 cases in these women were identified from the analysis of HSV-2 IgG enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay by Western blotting.
