Although bariatric surgery is highly beneficial for therapy for weight loss, it has a relationship with postoperative endocrine issues. Now the researchers have demonstrated the prevalence of secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) in vitamin-D deficient patients who have undergone gastric bypass surgeries. A total 502 patients were enrolled in this study who had a mean age of 46 years and mean BMI of 32 Kg/m 2 . The patients were followed up for 2 years after the surgery.

The study revealed that 71% of the patients (171 patients) has SHPT. It was also found that SHPT prevalence was highest (71%) with a vitamin-D level less than 25nmol/L. The lowest parathyroid hormone level and lowest prevalence of SHPT were found to be associated with >100 nmol/L vitamin-D.
