Trachoma is a very old disease, Let's say more than 50 years ago it was endemic in the asian and middle east. It used to occur due to poor hygienic conditions overcrowding living in one small room together. Use of same towel and handkerchief abundance of flies and lack of proper treatment. It is caused by Chlamydia trachomatis initially thought to be a virus or inclusion body.
Now it is supposed to be a gram-negative bacillus. Pathogenesis the trachoma organism enters an epithelial cell called as Leber cell here it divides into initial or elementary bodies when the number of these bodies is full the cell wall ruptures releasing a fresh inclusion body which is ready to attack another Leber cell and so the vicious circle continues trachoma used to be staged stage of hyperemia and infiltration follicular stage stage of scarring stage of post trachomatous concretions.
