Traumatic experiences can have serious adverse effects on the brain, the body (specifically sensory sensitivity), and the mind. However, there is less evidence for the treatment approach for survivors of childhood sexual abuse who develop fibromyalgia. A recent study published in the Frontiers in Psychology reported that survivors of childhood sexual abuse who develop fibromyalgia could be effectively treated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy , which delivers oxygen to the oxygen-deprived tissues.

The results of this study showed that there was a s ignificant improvement in all measures of quality of life , including symptoms of fibromyalgia and post-traumatic stress disorder. Thirty women with a history of childhood sexual abuse and suffering from fibromyalgia were included in this study.
