The challenges associated with open surgery for groin hernia are multifactorial. Some of them include wide linea alba resulting in peritoneal breach, placement of balloon trocar resulting in the dissection of muscle fibers, pneumoperitoneum, and balloon rupture in the preperitoneal space.
