Dry Eye Syndrome (DES) is caused by the lack of sufficient lubrication and moisture on the surface of eye. Symptoms include persistent dryness, scratchiness, red eye, and a burning sensation, and generally prompt an ophthalmologist to diagnose patient with DES. Another symptom is the nagging feeling of having some foreign body in your eyes. Eye doctors may also measure amount of tears in eyes using a thin strip of filter paper, called as Schirmer test, to measure tear production.
A study was conducted that discussed the impact of this Dry Eye Syndrome on the vision-associated quality of life. Total of about 700 people that participated in this study were handed a questionnaire about the limitations in their everyday activities due to dry eye.
