The Medical Council of India (MCI) will grant incentive marks to doctors working in rural areas for getting admission to PG courses. The Supreme Court has backed this regulation of the MCI, stating that this would encourage medical practitioners to opt for assignments in remote areas facing acute deficit of doctors. The bench of judges justified the decision by further stating that the marks obtained in the common entrance test should not be the exclusive criteria for admission to PG courses in medical science.

The academic merit of a candidate should also surmise the services rendered for public good and thus the supreme court supported the regulation drafted by the MCI. The judgement stated the the provision for giving incentive marks to in-service candidates is permissible in law, and thus the provision to clause IV in the regulation must be upheld in larger public interest.
