Medical experts across India are raising serious concerns over the widespread and often unchecked use of steroids, which is increasingly emerging as a major cause of secondary glaucoma, a sight-threatening condition that can result in permanent blindness if left untreated. Steroids, commonly prescribed or self-administered for allergies, skin disorders, respiratory conditions, and even as easily available eye drops, can significantly elevate intraocular pressure when used over prolonged periods.
With January being observed as Glaucoma Awareness Month, ophthalmologists are drawing attention to a troubling trend: the growing incidence of steroid-induced glaucoma caused by unsupervised or long-term steroid use.
