An Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU) can act as a step-up or step-down unit between the general ward and the ICU. It can also be used to manage patients from the emergency department or recovery ward. Most IMCUs cater to specific medical specialties or functions, such as obstetrics, cardiac, or neurology, and therefore, the characteristics, type, and nature of services provided vary in every IMCU.
