Idiopathic Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL) is characterized by acute hearing loss, usually associated with aural fullness and tinnitus. It has been defined as the Subjective sensation of hearing impairment in one or both ears developing within 72 hours and a decrease in hearing of more than or equal to 30 decibels (dB), on 3 consecutive frequencies in comparison to normal ear on audiometry. It is an emergent situation, and early institution of therapy plays an important role in recovery. Published series report spontaneous recovery rates for patients with SHL range from 47% to 63%.
