Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is an RNA virus that spreads through respiratory droplets and causes upper and lower respiratory tract infections. Upper respiratory tract infection symptoms include cough, rhinorrhea, congestion, and sore throat, while lower respiratory tract infection symptoms include wheezing, fever, cough, dyspnea, and hypoxia. HMPV can also cause bronchiolitis, acute asthma exacerbations, croup, and pneumonia in children. Furthermore, it may also lead to diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and acute otitis media.

These symptoms can be severe in older adults, immunocompromised individuals, and those with comorbidities. HMPV infections can be managed with supportive care due to the lack of specific treatment or vaccine. Notably, severe cases may require supplemental oxygen support.
