Studies have established that immune memory achieved, either by primary infection or post-immunization , prevents or reduces the severity of SARS-CoV-2 re-infection. It has been reported that 90-99% of infected patients develop humoral and cell-mediated adaptive immunity , and the chances of re-infection within 6-12 months are extremely rare. While the exact duration of this protective shield remains to be determined, scientists believe that the immune response against the virus persists for at least 6 to 8 months.
