Post-caesarean infectious morbidities, including endometritis and wound infections, remain significant contributors to maternal morbidity, particularly in low-resource settings. To address this concern, a study evaluated whether preoperative vaginal cleansing with 10% povidone iodine reduces post-operative infections following emergency caesarean section in 266 pregnant women. The study found that preoperative vaginal cleansing with 10% povidone iodine before emergency caesarean section significantly reduced post-caesarean infectious morbidity compared with standard care.
Overall, infectious morbidity occurred in 8 of 129 women (6.2%) in the intervention group compared with 29 of 131 women (22.1%) in the control group. Endometritis was observed in 4 of 129 women (3.1%) who received vaginal cleansing versus 18 of 131 women (13.7%) in the control group, while wound infection occurred in 4โฆ
