25 years woman was involved in road traffic accident, she was stable, the ultrasound did not show any evidence of fluid but next day showed guarding and tenderness of abdomen. Exploratory laparotomy showed gangrene of gall bladder with normal liver and CBD. The gall bladder was excised and the post operative period was uneventful. Gangrene of gallbladder usually results from untreated gallbladder inflammation. It usually occurs as a result of blood supply obstruction. Gall stone may block CBD resulting in distension and may hamper blood supply, super added by infection and inflammation.
If left untreated, it may result in gangrene. It is a very rare complication. Isolated gallbladder injury with perforation and haemobilia following blunt trauma to the abdomen is reported earlier but search of literature shows that gangrene is not reported. Early diagnosis is difficult. However,…
