Dr. Prakash Shere, a retired doctor from Latur, has secured a place in the UK World Book of Records for performing 502 family planning surgeries in a single day back in 1983. Dr. Shere recalls that in 1983, the family planning campaign by the government was going strong and said, “ In the municipal hospital of Latur, we had female patients who had come for the sterilization procedure under the mega camp organized by the revenue and health departments with the municipal body ”.
The retired medico said that he was working incessantly for 12 - 13 hours at eight operation tables and performed the family planning surgeries in the presence of the then Latur district collector, Syed Shahzad Hussain on February 17, 1983.
